Red Velvet "Russian Roulette" MV Review | Dying For Drama

I didn't quite know what to expect from Red Velvet with this comeback. Their last comeback had been so calm and balad-y, but then Dumb Dumb and Ice Cream Cake were the complete opposite of that, so I really didn't know what was in store. Here's what I thought about it.

I'm going to start with the song because I'm listening to it as I write this and something's occured to me. This is basically the stereotype of k-pop. It's so k-pop it feels like a paranoia. There's the electro in background, the high pitched voiced, the fucking weird MV. GUYS I'VE FOUND THE K-POP STEREOTYPE! 

In all seriousness, the song is actually pretty good. It's quite vintage, but still very electronic and all in all it's pretty catchy. I like it - I mean I wouldn't have it on repeat but if it came on while I was on shuffle on Youtube I wouldn't skip past it. Does that make any sense? Though the more I think about this is definitely the kind of song I could expect to grow on me.

Onto the video. Wow. What the fuck is the video about. From what I understand, they're trying to kill someone (or multiple people) like they do in cartoons. Ex. Piano falling on them, fridge falling on them, ect... 

Then mixed in with that they're playing tennis? And sometimes it's normal quality but then sometimes it goes all vintage-y. It's just really fucking weird, that's all I can say about it to be honest. 

Maybe it's because I don't understand what they're singing about, but I'm betting more for them having been on some kind of LSD when they thought up the MV.

All in all, this isn't all bad. It's pretty catchy and the production isn't too shabby. The composition is pretty good, too.

I'm giving this comeback 3,5 kimchis out of five.

Drama Drinking Game: King Of High School | Dying For Drama

I've decided to do another drama drinking game, simply because I'm currently obsessed with King Of High School (with my love, Seo In Guk). If you're interested in what it's about a high school guy called Lee Min Seok, who's just a normal high schooler, ice-hockey team, he usual. His older brother, who looks shockingly like him, is meant to come back from Germany, but doesn't. Min Seok gets a call in the middle of the night from his brother, asking him to go to his new job, posing as him. So basically he ends up living a double life, half high-schooler, half-successful business man.
It's hilarious and there's of course a love plot and all that kind of jazz, but this isn't a review, this is a drinking game, so let's do this.

The Wonders That Are: K-Pop Fangirl | Dying For Drama

I've done a couple of these and they always seem to go down really well with you guys so I figured I'd make another one. This time I decided to talk about k-pop fangirls because my god... This is a not something I can just make a passing point on in another post!

Sasaeng

Basically the mega-fangirls of the k-pop world. They're basically massive stalkers and in my opinion they're the reason k-pop fans get a bad rep, because they follow idols around, even to their dorms, want to know their every move. Remember the BTS airport incident that happened in Taiwan? I bet good money that there was a majority of sasaengs. Anyway, they're the kind of fangirl that'll follow their favourite group to their dorms and that kind of thing.

The Merch Fans

These fans are pretty big fans of certain groups, and proceed to spend any money they come across on merch. Posters, t-shirts, phone cases, CDs, bags, you name it, if their favourite groups sells it, they have it.

The Silent Fans

These are quite simply the kind of fans you wouldn't even believe are fans of k-pop at all. They don't spend their time going on about it, they're just casual fans.

The Arguers 

These are the fans that will defend their bias/favourite group to the death. If you even consider saying anything about them, you are sure to die, spammed to death by a hoard of them. They're incapable of think rationally once you set them off and they kind of just see red and go mad. 

The Mothers

I've found only met of couple of these kind of fans, but it's basically the kind of fan that aren't 'in love' with their favourite idols, but they consider them like their children and care about them in a motherly way. It's both adorable and messed up in equal measures.

The Closeted Fans

We started one extreme and finished with another. These are the kind of fans who don't openly admit they're fans of k-pop, out of fear of being criticised or mocked, but they can't help but fangirl a bit when they see a comeback or a new variety show episode.

EXO 'LOTTO' MV Review | Dying For Drama

EXO came back again! I was really intrigued after having seen a few things about it on Twitter, but they were generally from EXO-Ls so I decided to have a listen myself to see what I thought about it.

The song in itself is very different to anything EXO's released from what I've heard from them, in any case. It's a very RnB type beat instead of their funk/hip-hop type that they usually do. The song is basically about how they're really rich and don't need money so they spend it on champagne, women and gambling which to be totally honest disappointed me because it's quite a superficial concept, but then on the other hand I do like because you don't always need to be talking about something really deep and serious. There's a lot of criticism about this song as they were rather heavy-handed with the autotune and you really can hear it (right from the start it sounds very warbly and robotic - a telltale sign that autotune's been used). I was disappointed when I heard that they had used autotune, especially to the point where it was so noticeable, since EXO have nice voices to begin with (at least, I think? It's making me doubt every song of theirs I've ever listened to). I actually think it would have sounded better without the autotune but it's too late now, though I have to admit that it does give a nice and rather different effect to what it would be if they were to not have used autotune. 

The MV is pretty straightforward for the most part. They're spending money, gambling, partying, being rich lil' shits as you do. Then there are other shots where there's a girl running and a wolf and then one of them (I think it's Chanyeol?) picks her up and they drive away but get caught and arrested by the police and to be honest those parts I didn't really understand at first, but from reading the comments I've kind of figured out that it's because they were running the gambling rings like illegal cock fighting (as soon as I saw that I knew someone was going to have a hissy fit about it) so that's why they got arrested in the end, though I still don't get who the girl is. Feel free to explain in the comments if I'm so ignorant it hurts you inside. 

As a whole, I really enjoyed this MV. Despite all the things it's been criticised for (not sounding like other EXO songs, cock fighting, autotune), I really enjoyed it and thought it deserves a lot of love because it is actually a really good, catchy song, that is, for once, different to what everyone else (or at least the groups I listen to) are releasing nowadays, which is really refreshing.

Agust D 'Agust D' Mixtape Review | Dying For Drama

Okay... *heavy breathing* you can keep calm... *heavy breathing* OKAY NO I CAN'T.

YOONGI FINALLY DROPPED HIS MIXTAPE. I CANNOT DEAL. OHHHH MY GOOOOSH.

It's okay, I'm fine. I'm good. I'm just very excited. So for those who are thinking "the fuck. Who the hell is Yoongi and why is his mixtape so exciting?"

Min Yoongi is the real name of BTS' Suga (my boyy!). For about two years now, he's been hinting about this mixtape that just never seemed to come. He tortured us and tortured us and made us wait for two long years, and then, all of a sudden about a month ago, Yoongi finally announced that he's releasing his mixtape in early August - and here it is!! He's decided to call himself Agust D (backwards it spells Dt Suga, Dt for Daegu town which is the rap group he was in before he came a trainee and Suga, well, because that's his rap name in BTS) instead of Suga which I can kind of understand seeing as he probably wants to show that it's not an extension of BTS, and more his music.

Can we just take a second to appreciate how his mixtape cover looks like an Instagram edit?

The mixtape has 10 songs:

And here's what I thought of them:

  1 - Really catchy beat. It's only short seeing as it's the mixtape's intro but gives a good taste of what's to come.

  2 - The title song of the mixtape and oohh lordy is it worth it! It’s incredible. The production is gorgeous and you can tell he’s put a lot of work into it. The lyrics are really well placed and it’s just generally a bloody great song. It’s hard-hitting and when you actually read the lyrics it’s even better. See the MV here.

  3 - This is quite different to the other songs. At first, there's just a very distorted violin, think drunk guy playing the violin. It's very catchy in any case like almost all of the songs on this mixtape, really.

  4 - Even though it's in Korean I found the translation and it's basically Yoongi talking to his brother at a cafe about the mixtape and how thankful he is for having his brother supporting him all this time.

  5 - The beat to this reminds me of 50s style ad music at the chorus which made me chuckle a bit. As for the actual song, I really like it, there's nothing particularly incredible to it but it's cool to hear him just spit some rhymes. 

  6 - This sounds basically like the previous song without the double bass (I'm guessing it's a double bass).

  7 - THIS TRACK BROKE MY HEART. I have no idea what he's saying (I prefer it that way when I listen to k-pop) but you can just hear the pain in his voice and it broke my heart. It starts and sounds like a usual hip-hop song, then it kind of all goes batshit and the beat gets insanely intense and Yoongi's rapping like his life depends on it and it's amazing! It's probably one of my favourite tracks on the mixtape. You can hear all the emotions in his voice and it's truely beautiful.

  8 - I didn't like this song as much as the others. It's got a weird feel to it that I can't quite place. It's a good song, there's no doubting that, but it just wasn't really to my taste. It sounded a bit too white-washed for my tastes.

  9 - I'm not really sure what to think about this song. There's no actual lyrics to it, just Yoongi saying "dream" at regular intervals. It's very much based on the composition and the instruments of the song.

  10 - And to finish up the whole thing, this beautiful song. I think he did really well to add Suran to sing the chorus. It adds a certain softness that wouldn't necessarily have otherwise. It's very different to anything else in the mixtape, but in a good way. It's a lot more gentle, rather than the harshness the other tracks had in the forefront of the tracks.

All in all, I'm so happy with this mixtape. It really was worth the wait! One thing that stood out for me in this whole thing is that none of the songs sound the same. They're all unique in themselves.

I'm going to give this mixtape 5 kimchis out of 5. *waves wand in an overly enthusiastic manner*

VIXX 'Fantasy' MV Review | Dying For Drama

I can hear a sharp intake of breath from any regular readers from here! *laughs at own shitty joke*

Right, okay so when I heard that VIXX had their comeback, I was apprehensive. I decided to listen to it despite my distaste for Dynamite, because like I'd said in that other review, I really enjoy the other things VIXX had released in the past. So with an open mind and heart, I listened and I'm going to tell you what I thought of it.

So for the entirety of the intro and the first verse I was like “oh shit I’m not going to enjoy this, I can feel it. It’s got that very disjointed and badly put together feel that Dynamite had but then the bridge came and I started to eat my words, slowly but surely. By the chorus I had taken back everything I had said. The chorus sweeps you off your feet and totally takes you by surprise. The vocals are on point on and the beats combine beautifully. The first chorus is short enough for it to give you a taste of what to look forward to later on in the song.

I definitely prefer the chorus to the verses. They’re a lot more dramatic and powerful and even technically I much prefer the choruses.

Also, can we talk about Ravi for a sec?! What happened?! Not only does his white hair make him look hot as fuck and suit him to no end, but that rap verse was just amazing! 

Onto the MV. I’m glad to see that they’ve taken the dark concept, that’s something that really drew me to VIXX in the beginning is that they have such a dark and eery concept as a group, not just for certain comebacks. But is it just me that feels like we don’t see a lot of Hongbin in this comeback?

Cinematographically, this MV is beautiful. You can tell that the shots are really thought out and well planned. I love the choreography. It’s very crisp and follows the music really well.

In all, I was very very pleasantly surprised for this comeback. It's everything you hope for in a VIXX song and MV and it makes me happy inside.

I'm giving 'Fantasy' 4 kimchis out of 5 simply because of the verses.
