EXO Grand Comeback Review Part 2: “Lucky One” | Dying For Drama

This is the second and final part of the EXO Grand Comeback Review thing I’ve been doing, however you join me when I’m rather unenthused since the song I’m reviewing is pretty shit compared to the previous one (review here). Let’s just get on with it, shall we? Here is my thoughts on Lucky One.

The song is okay. Pretty catchy, but it’s nothing exceptional, it’s not really my cup of tea, it’s nothing I’d listen to on repeat, in any case. I mean the chorus is pretty good. I like the flute thing in the background, that kind of helps with giving it a bit of originality, even though it does just sound like they’re trying to mask the rehashed disco crap that (like I said in the “Dynamite” review) almost everyone is doing at the moment.

It’s okay. I’ll give it that. It’s okay. Nothing too painful to listen to. But not that good either. I don’t really know how to explain it.

The MV is fucking weird. After having watched it a few times, I’ve come up with this plot line: they’ve been kidnapped by a mad scientist (Human Centipede-style) and he wants to experiment on them, so naturally they’re trying to escape (which would explain all the running around), and the scientist’s evil robot helpers are trying to catch them. Also, they are dancing and standing in front of planets for some reason. Oh, and a window breaks, don’t know why. Then, in the middle of all this, Kai has a sudden urge to break out in dance that corresponds coincidentally to the music. WHAT ARE YOU DOING BOY RUN HE'S GOING TO SHORTEN YOUR INTESTINS TO SEE IF YOU SURVIVE OR NOT. (Okay I need to calm down.)
Though it was nice to see them with their powers again. 

I really want to like this song. It's a good song, but it's not amazing. I feel like Monster is definitely the stronger song of the two.

I must admit that for a large portion of the MV I was confused and I’m not even going to try and understand it properly. I haven't got much to say about it. 

I'm going to give 2,5 kimchis out of 5. Sorry EXO. Still love you, though.

EXO Grand Comeback Review Part 1: “Monster” | Dying For Drama

EXO has had their comebackkk! I was intrigued when I first heard the teaser for Lucky One, and then I found out that they were releasing not one but two MVs. At that point I realised that I literally had no choice in the matter and had to review it. However, since if I reviewed both the MVs in the same post, we’re going to be here until next week, so I decided to make this into a two part thing, starting with Monster, then next week you’ll be getting the second part to this where I review “Lucky One”.

About the song. I seem to have had a lot to say about the song when looking at my notes so I’m going to get straight into it. First can we just talk about the chorus for a sec? I’m obsessed with it! *sings* I’m creeping in your heart, babe. It’s seriously catchy. I’m actually a bit disappointed about the verses, they seem a bit bland in comparison. Despite that, the song is rather fresh and different to what I usually hear in comebacks.

The rap is on point! I don’t know who the rap line is in EXO-K but they are doing a mighty fine job in my opinion, as are the high note.

The mix between English and Korean/Chinese (depending on the version you’re listening to) is very well balanced and I feel like the English compliments the other lyrics well (LOL look at me talking about music as if I actually know shit). The composition of the song in general is really good, actually. Everything’s layered very well - take notes, VIXX (sorry I had to, it was too tempting).

The whole song in general is very EXO. For me, they have this thing that is always there in every song they release that makes them pretty recognisable. 

I still feel like something’s missing, though. I don’t know what it is, but I keep wanting something else that isn’t there are I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. 

I don’t even know where to start for the MV. Oh wait, I do - they all look fucking gorgeous as usual (even if I still can’t tell who is who).

There no real concept to it, I don’t think, I’m hesitating between bad boy or army, either of which is dull and rehashed. It’s a good MV, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not the most original thing in the world, is it? Also, if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times - stop with the jump cuts! What is it with bloody everyone in k-pop being obsessed with jump cuts, you’re going to kill me! 

However, I must give probs to the choreo because it is fucking amazing. (Though I would probably have a heart attack if I tried to learn it *sob*).

If I’m totally honest I just want a bit more of their faces and that’d do me. I’m easily pleased.

I’m going to give monster 3,9 kimchis out of 5 - I wanted to give it 4 but the video let it down.

VIXX "Dynamite" MV Review | Dying For Drama

I know I'm late as fuck to the "Dynamite" party but with BTS's album I'd kind of forgotten about all the other groups I listen to - oops.

I had actually listened to Dynamite on the day it came out, but, like previously mentioned, I'd totally forgotten about it and only just remembered that "oh yeah, VIXX are a thing, should probably listen to their comeback in a bit more detail, shouldn't I' - so that's what I did, and I'm going to review it for you guys now.

I'm not going to lie to you guys, after I listened to the song, I was disappointed. It's basically a bland, disco/pop fusion that every k-pop boy band is doing recently and I was disappointed since I liked a lot of what VIXX had previously released (Voodoo Doll, Chained Up and Error, to name a few), and to see them release this kind of bland, same-as-everyone-else kind of thing was thoroughly anti-climatic.
Also, I found the composition of the song was really messy. There wasn't much order to it and I feel like the voice and backing was layered really clumsily. I mean, it's catchy enough, but not enough for me to put it on my phone.

About the MV, well, it's enough to give you an epileptic fit. I don't even think I'd be able to explain it for you guys like I usually do. What's with all the jump cuts, boys?! I was dizzy by the end! In all seriousness, despite the fact that, yeah, it was quite pretty, there was just too much crammed in, as if they were trying to get their money's worth.
I was also disappointed that it was a box MV. WHy?! I always loved VIXX for their interesting MVs, that actually had stories or something to look at, where as this one was either choreo, them looking pretty or colourful things exploding.

I'd like to take a second to express my discontent as Hongbin's new haircut. He was so much hotter with long hair, and now there's nothing for me to stare at anymore and that makes me very sad (LOL says the lesbian).

I'm giving this MV 1 kimchi out of 5 - a sad day indeed for both VIXX and Dying For Drama.
